How to change the logo in SuiteCRM 7 and 8

Replace the SuiteCRM logo with your own: where the setting is in SuiteCRM 7 and 8, size and format rules, the file it writes, and why a new logo may not show.

How do you change the logo in SuiteCRM?

To change the logo in SuiteCRM, an administrator opens Admin > System Settings, picks a .png or .jpg file in the Select Logo field and saves. SuiteCRM stores it as custom/themes/default/images/company_logo.png (inside public/legacy/ on SuiteCRM 8) and scales anything larger than 450 by 170 pixels down to fit.

Steps at a glance

  1. Open System Settings. Log in as an administrator and go to Admin > System Settings.
  2. Choose the new logo. In the Logos section, use Select Logo to pick a .png or .jpg file.
  3. Save. Click Save. SuiteCRM copies the file into place and clears its own logo cache.
  4. Hard-refresh the browser. Reload with Ctrl-F5, or Cmd-Shift-R on a Mac, so the browser stops showing its cached copy of the old logo.

Logo size and format

RuleSuiteCRM 7 and 8
File types.png or .jpg (SuiteCRM checks the file really is an image)
Maximum width450 px
Maximum height170 px
Larger imagesScaled down to fit those limits
Where it showsIn the centre of the login screen, according to SuiteCRM's own help text

Because a larger image is scaled down rather than refused, crop the logo close to the artwork before you upload it, so no space is wasted on empty margins.

Where SuiteCRM stores the logo

Saving copies the image into the default theme's images folder under custom/, always under the same name, company_logo.png, even when you uploaded a .jpg:

SuiteCRMFile
7.xcustom/themes/default/images/company_logo.png
8.xpublic/legacy/custom/themes/default/images/company_logo.png

Because it lives under custom/, an upgrade does not replace it: custom/ is where SuiteCRM keeps site changes, and SuiteCRM 8's upgrader keeps public/legacy/custom/ explicitly. See why upgrades undo custom colours for what an upgrade does replace.

Why the new logo does not show

SymptomLikely causeFix
Old logo still visible after savingThe browser is showing its cached copyHard-refresh (Ctrl-F5 or Cmd-Shift-R), or open the page in a private window
"The file format of the image must be JPEG or PNG"The file is not a real PNG or JPEG, whatever its extension says (an SVG, WebP or a renamed file)Export the logo as .png or .jpg and upload that
"Error during the upload of the image"The upload never reached SuiteCRM, often because it is over PHP's upload size limitUpload a smaller file, or ask your host to raise upload_max_filesize
Saved without an error, still the old logo for everyoneThe web server cannot write to custom/themes/default/images/Make that folder writable by the web server user, then save again

You do not need Quick Repair and Rebuild for a logo change: saving clears SuiteCRM's logo cache by itself. It does no harm if you run it anyway.

Logo and colour theme together

The logo and the colour theme are separate settings: changing one does not change the other. If you are rebranding SuiteCRM, do both. A Brandtint theme package can also set your logo as the SuiteCRM company logo when it installs, if you choose that option, and puts the previous logo back when you uninstall it.

Questions

Does changing the logo change the SuiteCRM colours?

No. The logo and the colour theme are separate settings. Changing the logo in System Settings leaves the theme as it was, and changing the theme leaves the logo alone.

Will a SuiteCRM upgrade remove my logo?

No. SuiteCRM saves the logo under custom/themes/default/images/, and custom/ is where SuiteCRM keeps site changes. SuiteCRM 8's upgrader keeps public/legacy/custom/ explicitly.

What size should a SuiteCRM logo be?

At most 450 pixels wide and 170 pixels tall, as a .png or .jpg file. SuiteCRM scales a larger image down to fit those limits rather than refusing it.
